Deck & Fence Cleaning in Southern Ohio

The green, gray, or black film on your deck isn’t just ugly — it’s biological growth degrading the wood surface. We restore it safely, whether you’re preparing for a new stain or simply want it clean.

Getting the Method Right

Wood and Composite Are Not the Same Surface

Treating wood with too much pressure raises the grain, fuzzes the surface, and drives moisture deeper into the board. Too little pressure leaves biological growth behind. Composite and PVC decking requires even more care — some manufacturers void warranties when high-pressure washing is used.

We adjust pressure, nozzle angle, and chemistry based on the specific material. For pressure-treated pine and natural wood, we use a low-pressure wood cleaner that brightens the surface and opens the grain — ideal before staining or sealing. For composite, we work with a soft-wash approach and composite-safe cleaners only.

Fences get the same surface-specific approach: a wood privacy fence needs different chemistry and technique than a vinyl picket fence or a cedar rail fence.

The Growth You’re Seeing:

Gray Film & Weathering

UV oxidation and surface breakdown. Cleaning followed by a brightener restores natural color before staining.

Green Algae

Slippery and fast-spreading. Common on shaded, north-facing decks. Chemical treatment kills it at the root.

Black Mildew & Mold

Penetrates into wood fibers over time. Needs proper dwell time from cleaning solution to fully neutralize.

Why Clean Your Deck & Fence

What’s at Stake Beyond Appearance

🎨
Stain & Seal Prep

Stain applied over a dirty or moldy surface won’t penetrate or bond correctly. A professional clean is the essential first step before any refinishing work.

🦺
Slip Hazard Removal

Algae-covered deck boards are dangerously slippery, especially when wet. Cleaning removes the hazard and makes the space usable again.

🪵
Wood Preservation

Mold and mildew actively break down wood fibers. Regular cleaning prevents rot from establishing and extends deck lifespan significantly.

✨
Restored Appearance

A clean deck and fence transform the look of your entire backyard. It’s often the single highest-impact improvement per dollar spent on your outdoor space.

Our Process

How We Clean Decks & Fences

01
Surface Assessment

We check the material type, existing finish or stain, and severity of growth. This determines the right chemistry and pressure settings for the job.

02
Cleaner Application

We apply wood cleaner or composite-safe solution at low pressure, working with the grain on wood surfaces. Dwell time allows chemistry to break down biological matter.

03
Rinse & Brighten

Thorough rinse removes all loosened material. For wood being prepped for staining, we apply a wood brightener to open the grain and restore natural tone.

Common Questions

Deck & Fence Cleaning FAQ

How long should I wait after cleaning before applying stain or sealer?
Wood typically needs 48–72 hours of dry time after washing before stain or sealer is applied. In humid Ohio summers, give it the full 72 hours. The wood should read below 15–18% moisture if you have a meter. Staining on damp wood traps moisture and leads to early peeling.
My deck is pressure-treated pine. Is it safe to wash?
Yes — pressure-treated pine is one of the most common deck materials we clean. We use a dedicated wood cleaner and controlled pressure. The key is working with the grain and keeping the nozzle at the right angle and distance. Done correctly, it cleans thoroughly without raising the grain or damaging the surface.
Can you clean a vinyl or composite fence?
Absolutely. Vinyl and composite fencing are some of the easiest surfaces to restore to like-new condition with the right approach. We use low pressure and appropriate cleaners to remove mildew, pollen, and green staining without scratching or dulling the surface.
How often should I have my deck cleaned?
In southern Ohio’s climate, most decks benefit from cleaning every 1–2 years. Decks in heavy shade or near water may need annual attention. If you’re on a staining or sealing maintenance schedule, cleaning before each refinish is the right rhythm.
